Bin Bags / Waste Sacks

The main material used for the manufacture of bin bags is polyethylene.

If the bin bags are going to be used for the storage of lightweight material, such as paper or a light plastic such as polystyrene, then a relatively thin bag with a small gauge can be used. Typically those bags can be a less than a quarter of a millimetre thick or less.

Standard ‘kitchen’ bags will be usually about twice this gauge in order to cope with the usual household waste.

Heavy or wet waste will require a bag with a much larger gauge such as the ‘rubble bag’ which has the strength and robustness to cope with waste such as bricks or other construction material waste which is not only heavy but has sharp edges which will easily cause tears in a smaller gauge bag.

The capacity of most standard waste bags s around 60 to 90 litres and standard colours are black or grey. Sometimes, however, the colour of a bag is an indicator of its use with green polyethylene being used for garden waste or clippings which are biodegradable. Likewise white bags are sometimes used purely for paper products such as newspaper. Clinical waste bags tend to be yellow in colour or another very bright colour.
